ScienceCasts: The 2012 Transit of Venus

It won't happen again until December 2117. On June 5th, 2012, Venus will transit the face of the sun in an event of both historical and observational importance. The best places to watch are in the south Pacific, but travel is not required. The event will also be visible around sunset from the USA.

Incandescent Sun

This video takes SDO images and applies additional processing to enhance the structures visible. While there is no scientific value to this processing, it does result in a beautiful, new way of looking at the sun. The original frames are in the 171 Angstrom wavelength of extreme ultraviolet which shows plasma at around 600,000 Kelvin. The video covers 24 hours of activity on September 25, 2011.

While flying at about 240 statute miles above Earth, NASA Astronaut Don Pettit captured the rare solar eclipse as the moon casted its dark shadow across the planet below as it lined up between Earth and the sun.

Mt. St. Helens Timelapse

The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the state of Washington leveled surrounding forest, blasted away more than1,000 feet of the mountain's summit and claimed 57 human lives.

Landsat satellites have tracked the recovery of the surrounding forest. This video shows a timelapse of the recovery, with annual images from 1979-2011.

Prezados amigos, o CEAAL Realizou mais uma note de observações Astronômicas no Observatório Astronômico Estadual Genival Leite e Lima. Tivemos um bom número de visitantes e disponibilizamos cerca de 4 telescópios para observação dos mais variados objetos celestes: Marte, Saturno, M4, M6, M7, Caixinha de joias, Ômega Centauro, M22, etc. Compareceram os seguintes sócios neste sábado: Romualdo Arthur, Adriano Aubert, Seu Fidélis, Edmílson Barreto, Lucas Amorim, Luís Lima, Sérgio Caldas, Roberta, Rosê Meire, Marcos e Marcelo, além dos amigos, Sérgio Borba, Sérgio, Rosângela, D.
